Week in Review (Part 1)

Week in review...

The last week has been FABULOUS. Why you ask? Well, because the 16th was my birthday. It all started on Thursday night...

First stop - dinner with my parents at Duo Mari in New Brunswick, NJ. I had only been there once before and I will definitely return again and again. The food and service are amazing! Now all the gorging I did there really should have been enough, but really it was just the beginning.

When I got home from dinner I had a package waiting for me from an amazing woman who has been part of my life since I was just 4 years old. Her and my mom were class mothers of our Pre-K class. Jennie Ng Lopresto is an incredibly talented designer who has this beautiful ray of light that shines from her (ALWAYS). She designs amazing jewelery using her inspiration from life, antiques, pop culture and everything else around her. Her following is huge, but she personally works with each and every client - thus the reason why you haven't yet seen her in the Bs (Bergdorf's and Bendel's). The bracelet she sent me is so very me and just 3-of-a-kind. I even created a whole outfit around it for the following day.

I woke up Friday morning and put on my new metallic and natural linen shorts from The Loft, white tank, Jennie Ng Lopresto bracelet and white and rhinestone sandals.

I took the day off of work. I'm lucky enough that I am in a position where I can do this every year. I feel like your birthday is the one day a year that you shouldn't feel guilty being selfish. First I got my presents from Mr E.

Not the cupcake, the pan. I really wanted a jumbo cupcake pan to make my friends and fam yummy treats. While I know I can just walk into Sprinkles and buy one, these will be made with love.

Ipad - He knows me better than I know myself. I didn't even know I wanted one, but he said I NEEDED it. He was right. Love it. Send your app reccs my way!

Then we went to Mesa Grill for lunch. If you've never been - go! What I love about it is the fact that it's different than so many of the restaurants in NYC. Southwest cooking is not very common. What I didn't like was that it was restaurant week and majorly crowded for a summer Friday at 1PM. Can't win them all!

Next it was time for me to do some birthday damage at the accessory capital of NY: Bendel's. As soon as I saw this bag by Magnes Sisters, I knew it was coming home with me. I love the taupe gray color for fall (though I'm carrying it today) and I think the unique shape is great. It fits the Ipad perfectly, along with everything else I need to carry.

All that shopping in 90 degree weather made me in desperate need of a refreshing snack. So we hopped, skipped, jumped and drove on over to one of my favorite place - Popbar. If you aren't familiar with it, the entire place is for popsicles, but not the regular kind. They're kind of like gourmet Froze Fruits, surely you remember those. This time I got a plain grapefruit one, but Mr E scored a coconut gelato bar half dipped in dark chocolate. Both delish.

If you're headed there, make sure to stop at the pickle stand. Well, that is if you're a pickle aficionado like me. It's only a few steps away and they have flavors like Cajun pickle! Unfortunately it was too hot to tote around that day and too strange to eat with my grapefruit, but next time.

From there, we did some more shipping. I'm sure my husband was just thrilled - oh what he does for me! I got a pair of blue Native shoes to wear for my Saturday Birthday excursion (more to come on that). I'm totally obsessed. They're lightweight, water proof and pretty darn cute. So different than the Aqua Socks I once wore (come on, you know you did too).

After wearing myself out, I was actually hungry again. You'd think I'd need a break from food, but that actually didn't come until about Sunday night, so I was still good to go. We had reservations at Morimoto. At first I felt like I was cheating. I had never been there before because we are regulars at Nobu (Tribeca). So much so that our favorite waiter knows our entire order by heart. Stepping into Morimoto was like a totally different world. Completely different than the simple and understated decor of Nobu. At first this scared me because very often the snazzier the restaurant, the more mediocre the food. Initially I wanted to run through the Meatpacking district and all the way to Tribeca...but I stuck it out and I am so happy I did. The food was AMAZING. We got a bunch of dishes as appetizers and then some sushi. The standouts were the Miso Soup for 2, the Fried Calamari salad and the King Crab Leg in creamy spicy sauce. When we go back, I would actually skip the sushi. I thought it was ok, but nothing to rave about. The dishes there are what is top notch.

I slept like a birthday Princess and awoke on Saturday morning for a day of fun with my friends. More to come!

15 Years Later Clueless Dress Makes A Comeback

This morning I woke up to a little bit of excitement, well exciting for me. While reading my morning blogs and news I discovered a short article on InStyle.com. It immediately caught my eye because in the title it mentioned "Clueless". Clueless happens to be my favorite movie of all time and I'm pretty sure any girl who was my age when it was released probably holds it close to their heart as well. Now for those who don't share my enthusiasm, don't get worked up. I don't actually believe the movie deserves critical acclaim or was snubbed at the 1996 Oscar's. I just think it is the best movie of all time - in its genre (teen comedy). If you disagree, at least consider that it gave us Paul Rudd (yummy). So now that, coupled with my love for fashion is what got me really excited this morning. LA's Confederacy Boutique asked Calvin Klein director Francisco Costa to re-cut the iconic white dress (15 years later) from the film for their store. I'm sure you remember it, but if you need a refresher - Cher (Alicia Silverstone) greets her date, the Jason Priestly look-a-like Christian, in the family dining room. Her father asks her, "What are you wearing?" She replies, "A dress." He asks, "Says who?" and she chuckles and responds, "Calvin Klein". The dress makes its debut today on their website for $916.

Not a Giant Leap, But a Nice Step

I'll be the first to admit that transitioning to a more eco-friendly lifestyle is a slow process for me. Of course, I always recycle, don't use unnecessary electricity and reuse or recycle any plastic bags that find their way to me. However, I'm definitely not ready to even consider letting my powerful sports car go, but I suppose one step at a time. That's where this comes in. Yesterday I made a teensy bit more progress. I was buying a bridal shower gift at Bed Bath & Beyond when I walked past these awesome cups by Copco. I own their hot beverage reusable cups, but since I'm not a coffee drinker, it rarely gets used. These are perfect because everyday my husband takes iced tea to work (Paradise Tropical passion fruit iced tea that we brew at home) and only a few weeks ago he asked me to order him a case of plastic cups like they have at Dunkin Donuts. I'm so glad I didn't get around to it because this cup eliminates so much un-needed plastic and is still exactly what he wanted. It's reusable, sturdy, has a simple modern design without a logo and cost only $7.99 We grabbed 2 and used a $5 off coupon making them $10.98. Score!

Best Thing I Ever Ate...My Edition

I'm so lucky that both my husband and I have jobs where we can accompany each other on business trips. We usually manage to devote time to work and then find some extra for ourselves, so earlier this month it was no different. We spent a week in LA having poolside meetings (tough life) with reps for NessaLee Baby and hitting some downtown showrooms for NessaLee Style. Then we popped over to Santa Barbara to get in a few days of much needed R&R. Whether we're working or playing, we're always partially focused on eating. Everyone who knows us knows that we're foodies. We seek out great food and when we find something we love, we remember it. Today is 1,095 days since we were married in front of 250 of our nearest and dearest in Mexico (3 years if you don't feel like thinking). The fact that we got to spend a week on vacation with everyone we know and love was incredible as is - Add in all the fun-filled celebratory events leading up to our wedding and it was even better - then top it off with our dream wedding day and it truly was a modern jet-set fairytale. Pictures To Last A Thousand Years

April is already here and that means that our 3rd wedding anniversary is quickly approaching. When we got married 3 years ago, we opted not to do engagement pics. Our reasons were that we were making not 1, but 2 video love stories to be shown at our wedding in Mexico and also that our wedding photographer was in California and we were in New Jersey. I'm an amazing Monday morning quarterback - no seriously, I'm REALLY good at it. So, after the fact I was of course bummed. On our first anniversary we were actually in LA and my husband surprised me with anniversary photos to make up for e-pics (such a cute idea!). David Jay was unavailable though, so after tremendous amounts of super-adorable research behind my back, Jordan chose another stellar photographer - Christine Farrah. Really, DJ had my heart...but then I met Christine...oh boy it's tough. They are 2 of the most talented photographers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. If you can hire either of them, you're wedding will be that much better! We loved the anniversary pics so much, that we absolutely had to do it again for our 2nd. Now it's time for our 3rd and it's become a tradition. Is it safe to call something a tradition after only 2 years? Either way, we're doing it again and we need to come up with a cute theme/concept. No Buy Buy For A Baby Of Mine

Yesterday during an afternoon in NYC, I popped into Buy Buy Baby for some market research. While walking through the strollers, which by the way are a MESS, the salesperson said to me "Congratulations!" It took a moment for it to register. Did she know I was opening a baby store and was giving me a thumbs-up on my latest venture? Perhaps she thought I was someone else? Now what probably clicked in your brain when you started reading this, didn't quite settle in as fast for me, but yes BINGO - She thought I was having a baby. Now I get that I was in a baby store, but is that just safe to assume? Wasn't it possible I already had kids and was upgrading my stroller, or perhaps buying a gift for a friend or family member? A little thrown off my game, I just smiled and said, "Oh, I'm not pregnant." To which she replied, "It's a girl! That's fantastic." Um OK...And with that I exited the store and did what any girl would do - found the closest mirror to obsess.

House Update

Things are going smoothly, but taking LONG. My lack of patience is starting to get the best of me, which is why you get to see these unfinished photos. Something I don't usually like to share.

Here is our foyer chandelier that I designed. It's crystal with a custom white shade that has chocolate brown piping around it. I love the way it looks in the window as you drive by our house. I'm so excited for the painting to be complete so I can have the protective plastic removed from it. Right now it feels like an old school grandma's couch!

This is something I bought a few weeks ago because I just had to have it. I had that pang of pain that if I left the store without it, I just might die. The only problem is...I have absolutely no use for it (or it's matching, but smaller counterpart that I forgot to mention I also purchased). To be fair to me - my husband discovered them in the store. Something tells me he might have even loved it more than I did because when I oohed and aahed and then whined I had no place to put it, he quickly suggested I buy it for our non-existent child to one day use as a toy or dress up chest. Sure!! However, now we seem a little crazy, don't we? Oh well. The trunk is far more beautiful in person. It's white with silver detailing throughout and silver nailheads framing the entire piece.
Remember my fireplace? The tile peeps are almost done! I snapped this photo while he was eating his lunch. He still has to do the right side and grout. Next we just need to remove the medallions (and tape) and add the top layer of clear & silver crystals to cover what's in there. Then more painting! Right now I think a crisp, bright and glossy white will be best. It's currently a dull eggshell.

The same day as the toy chest for the non existent child was purchased, so was this mirror. It's bark. How cool? As soon as the room is painted (the color on the left - Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter) it will be placed horizontally behind the couch and across from the fireplace. Then that super-comfy chair you see in the mirror can move back to its origin - exactly where the mirror currently is.

Hopefully for my patience and the sake of entertaining blog posts, all these things will be complete by next week.

I can't believe the adorable little girl in that leopard outfit is now 25. I remember playing Nintendo for hours and hours while she would sit next to me patiently and watch until she just couldn't take it anymore. Then her raspy little voice would ask, "Can I play with you?" Now she'd just rip the controller out of my hand.

Forever 21 Home Decor

Last summer Forever 21 announced their plans to venture into home decor. Since I first read about it, I've been fascinated, insanely curious and wondering if they will be selling items that mimic the display pieces that they decorate their stores with. Some reports claim that it is in fact furniture. This makes sense since some of their higher priced competitors like Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters have successfully tackled that, but others are claiming it may just be accent items (think mirrors and vases). The collection was supposed to hit their largest stores in late 2009, but that time came and went without as much as a peep from their corporate offices.

Here's a glimpse at some of the displays from what I think is their For Love 21 store in the Beverly Center.

Today's Outfit

One of my biggest fashion pet peeves happens on the day that the weather reaches 60 degrees for the first time. Some people think it's time to bust out their flip flops, shorts and sundresses. Bad idea. If you're patient, the proper weather will come. I promise. My outfit today appropriately embraced the slightly warmer weather and that's more than I can say for all the season pushers I saw!

Exciting Day For NessaLee Baby

Today was an exciting day for NessaLee Baby. We hand-picked 3 new lines to carry. Just to give a little background on what the store is trying to achieve - Every parent obviously knows that their life is going to change significantly when their bundle of joy arrives, but does that mean their home needs to become splattered in primary colors (this was a real concern of my friend, Amanda)? The answer is no. There are so many amazing brands out there with baby items that are stylish and can better fit into your lifestyle if that's what you choose. Not every mom and dad are the Winnie the Pooh kind and our customers definitely aren't. We want to give them a place where they can register for everything that will make their home and life welcoming and comfortable to the new baby, but look and feel less chaotic to them, as well as a variety of awesome and stylish gift items.

Drum roll please...

7 A.M. Enfant: As seen below on Jessica Alba's stroller for daughter, Honor. This line is everything I could dream of as far as baby gear is concerned. The color options are beautiful, each piece has so much functionality and the designs are chic. I'm head over heels for the diaper bag, which makes a great luggage carry-on, even when baby isn't present.

Itzy Ritzy: As seen below on Rebecca Romijn's stroller for twin daughters, Charlie and Dolly. The prints on Itzy Ritzy products are to die for. Each one is more modern than the next. Different products they make are car seat covers, peek-a-boo seat covers, burp cloths, snack and wet bags and shopping cart covers that can be used for single babies and twin riders!

Diaper Dude: As seen below on Jason Priestley for son, Dashiell. The number one reason why some men cringe at the thought of carrying a diaper bag is the fact that it looks like a man purse covered in little lambs. Diaper Dude gets rid of that problem with masculine messenger styles in great solids or camo print. No more excuse, Daddy.

I've been a bad blogger. I spent 10 days lounging under a hut in Aruba, only stopping to eat and cool off in the pool. While there I got to catch up on so many books and magazines. One article I read in Elle asked hair, make-up and skin professionals for their affordable must-have beauty items. It got me thinking to what mine were. I was very surprised when I realized how I don't require many expensive products. Check out my personal skincare list below.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Light & doesn't clog my pores. Palmer's Cocoa Butter stick. This is my everyday chapstick. It is always in my purse. I love that people think it's a glue stock. Clarisonic. I can't find a better way to take my make-up off. St Ives Apricot Scrub. I only use it 1-2x a week, but it totally gets the job done. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser Normal to Oily. Gently removes everything. Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque. Great for after intense gym sessions. Vaseline Lotion w/ SPF 15. Perfect for everyday moisture and sun protection.

I'm very particular about my swimwear. Getting undressed in no more than a decorative bra and underwear takes confidence and obviously it's so much easier to do when you know you look good. I'm a strong believer that swimwear cut and quality make all the difference in how good a woman looks. Vitamin A and Maya Swimwear are 2 brands that I find fit me best. However, after seeing diNeila swimwear, I'm so excited to try something new. Their designs are sexy (some of the sexiest 1 pieces I've ever seen!), unique and priced very well for the quality. Some of their high waisted suits were featured in the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. I plan on launching the NEW NessaLee with them this spring and can't wait to try them on myself! Warm Weather Bound

When I pack to go to California, Florida or Vegas I find it totally stress free. There's nothing I could forget that I couldn't easily buy there. In fact, twice last year it was chilly when I got to LA. As soon as I figured out my sundresses weren't going to cut it, I went out and bought a leather jacket, jeans, closed toe heels and long sleeve tops. Unfortunately, it just isn't that easy in the Caribbean or Mexico. Right now I'm assessing clothes to decide what I want to take. I find the best way is to lay everything out, even some accessories and then pick shoes that will work for multiple outfits. Since heels just look silly when everyone else is casual, I've traded them in for flip flops, sandals and wedges. This makes taking some outfits a little challenging for me. Here's a glimpse at round one. I generally do this about 3 times with all different outfits (I know, I'm crazy). The last 5 in the 2nd photo didn't make the definite cut as of yet.

RTW Fashion Faves

I love picking up a few staple blazers or jackets each year and after seeing alice+olivia's fall 2010 collection, I know exactly where my next ones will come from . I also love the pretty purple and mauve layered dress, but I think it would be best suited on a girl 10 years my junior. I can totally picture my former self rocking it at a homecoming dance or prom.

As always, Lorick did not disappoint me! This time she went with a 1920s speakeasy theme for the show to match the style of the collection. I loved the styling with the statement necklaces (very happy to see the proof that they will still go strong!) and though the sparkly tights are beautiful, I think they may work best on the editorial side. I can't picture me wearing them, however, with fashion I never say never because I often change my mood and mind.

Fashionably McFancy

I love fashion. I really do. But, I don't love Fashion Week in NY this time of year. It's always so cold. There's dirty snow and ice on the streets making it impossible to successfully wear suede shoes. Most of all, it's hard to get cabs anywhere near the tents - forcing you to stand in the cold (see a theme here?). This year though I'm more excited than normal. Why? For McDonald's of course. Yes, you read that right. McDonald's is bringing us pop up locations with high-end style that I just can't wait to see!

Yesterday my husband's best friend (he is the one who first got us together 10 years ago) closed on his first home. We went over last night to help him move and I was like a kid in a candy store. His beautiful new construction home, which he did an amazing job at picking the finishes for, is a blank canvas just dying to be decorated by a woman. Since Gregg is still on the hunt for a Mrs, I was just jumping up and down and flailing my arms in a desperate attempt to get chosen for the job. Even though I wasn't officially hired, I did spend a few minutes browsing the internet for furniture sleek enough for a bachelor pad, but that can be styled in a way that would make a woman want to move right in (aren't I a good friend?). I'm using this trip to get relaxed, recharged and I plan on getting back into it with a few books that require very little thought (aka beach reads). One of the best parts of my job is that I get to see fashion collections long before the public does. In the last year I haven't gotten super excited about many new things in fashion, so this week was quite a treat. Muubaa is a London Based leather fashion brand that launched in September 2007. The prices are excellent for high-quality leather and the styles are a mix of urban meats fashionably functional. As soon as I received the photos, I wanted so many pieces - now! When we first got our dining room table, our friends joked with us that we will have to find 10 other people to invite over to fill it for every dinner party. This got the conversation moving to an imaginary celebrity dinner party. Since that day it's something my husband and I jokingly discuss every now and then. We have some overlappers, but couldn't agree on an exact guest list. So, we will have to have 2 of these imaginary parties. Below are both of our lists. Interestingly, his is almost all male.

Vanessa's Imaginary Dinner Party

1 George W. Bush -I recognize the oddity of this one, but have many reasons.
2 Ryan Seacrest - I consider him the hardest working person in Hollywood.
3 Simon Cowell - I completely respect his honesty, intelligence and success.
4 Kim Kardashian - Every dinner party needs a reality tv star. Then she can show me how to do my eye makeup better.
5 Britney - I actually don't think Britney would be all that interesting, but it's Britney, I can't pass that up. Then Kim and I could style her, properly.
6 Derek Jeter - Even if everyone started fighting, he'd be the perfect picture of class.
7 Barbara Walters - She will undoubtedly keep the conversation going.
8 Robin Williams - Comic relief.
9 Prince Harry - He may not be the obvious royal choice, but he's definitely the fun one.

10 Justin Timberlake - Solely to sit him next to Britney. I'm evil like that.

Grammy Girls

After the huge fashion success of the women at AMAs and the Golden Globe's, last night definitely disappointed me a little. However, the men really stood out in my book. I loved the risks they took with patterns, textures and colors. I think it was fun and a little edgy. Nonetheless, here are my picks for the ladies of the night. Lea Michele from Glee has gotten it right at every event this season and her feather-skirted Romana Keveza cocktail dress, definitely added to her fashion success. Miley Cyrus unexpectedly wowed me in Herve Leger. Her makeup looked fantastic, the extra-long hair length totally worked on her and she was properly accessorized from head to toe. My favorite look of the night actually belonged to someone that I never would have guessed: Pink. I absolutely adored her gray scalloped Tony Ward gown in gray ombre. I love how Pink has this hard, slightly boyish personality, but girly glams is up with the best of them.

I love the stylish simplicity of her outfit and subtle the mix of the textures and patterns. Golden Globes Best Dressed Fashion Round Up

Last year I wasn't so happy with the award season fashion, but this time around I have a top 7 and that's just from the Golden Globes! Though Olivia Wilde's Gucci dress is not something that my personal fashion sense would gravitate towards, I thought the fit, combined with her hair and makeup was just stunning. I only got a glimpse of Maria Menounos on the red carpet, but quickly fell in love with her bright red gown. Short in the front and long in the back it had a Barbie goes to Hollywood feel. Who didn't ooh and ahh over Emily Blunt's pastel perfection in Dolce & Gabbana? Drew Barrymore's Atelier Versace gown was perfectly Drew. Feminine and pretty with those quirky under the sea-esque poofs. I don't think any other gown could have been better suited for her. Glee's Lea Michele wowed me and the crowd in a Princess-style Oscar de la Renta. Zoe Saldana's jewel tone Louis Vuitton gown fit her statuesque frame like a dream and was complemented with soft hair and makeup. The gold shade of Mo'Nique's strapless Reem Acra gown made her complexion glow (or was that the win?) and the shape of the gown with the draping in the back was extremely complimentary. This year the overall jewelry trend was understated - all 7 of my picks happen to be necklace free!

This weekend a pair of black ballet flats that were reccomended to me by one of my best friend's went on sale + another 30% off (code MLKSALE) at Cole Haan. I've been in the market for a super comfy pair since mine have seen better days, so how could I refuse? They're supposed to be extra cushy with an air bubble inside (think Nike Air Max) so I'm hoping they're perfect for walking and walking and walking the tremendous trade shows. When Abigail Lorick first debuted her collection 2years ago, I was in fashion heaven. The prints, colors, fabrics and silhouettes all reminded me of stylish girls attending high society tea parties in some imaginery other era. This spring's collection has a few stunning pieces that are a slight departure from the signature look, but it definitely doesn't disappoint. Those dresses make me long for days where I can wear what I want and not what doesn't make me freeze. Lorick, I will be seeing you in the spring!

For my entire life, I've either been on a family vacation for NYE or my parents have had a tremendous house party (think 100 people, bands, DJs etc). This year we pushed our vacation off a few weeks and planned a last minute party at our own house. I know it's safe to say that everyone had an awesome time. 1. (TV) Greek - It's fun, witty and reminds me of my sorority days. Can't wait for its return on Jan 25th!

2. (Music) Cobra Starship - They were my favorite break out band of the year by a landslide. Plus Gabe Saporta went to Rutgers when I did, that's another point for them.

3. (Home) Pacific Coast Pillow - Since I sleep best when I'm at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills, it was only natural that last time I pulled off the pillow case and looked for a manufacturer's tag. Found it! Ordered it! And now I sleep on it every night. Best pillow ever!

4. (Bag) Treesje Asher Tote - Like it so much, I bought 2 - electric blue and fuchsia! I love the style and quality of these bags and am extremely impressed by the brand's customer service.

5. (Etsy) Etsy changed my life over the last year. But, right now I'm giving snaps to my favorite seller: Lowleepop because 2009 was the year of the baby! So many people added little munchkins to their family. I discovered this seller on Etsy early in the year (who is sweet and amazing to work with) and made the Emergency Baby Rockstar Kit my signature gift.

6. (Restaurant) Redd - Unpretentious, incredible service and quite possibly the best food I ever had. If you'll be in the Napa Valley area, make this a stop on your list.

7. (Movie) The Hangover - I have never gone with the critics picks when it comes to movies. I want to be entertained and escape reality - not sit in a theater for 2 hours and ponder life. The Hangover most certainly did entertain and it now has a close place in my heart next to Wedding Crashers for my favorite comedies.

8. (Technology) Google Reader - At first I fought Reader hard. I just couldn't get used to it, but by the end of the year I was an addict. It allows me to follow all the blogs that I normally do in about 1/10th of the time. If you know me, you know I'm all about productivity.

9. (Accessory) Statement Necklaces - What better way to rev up any outfit than to add a pound of jewels and chains to it? I'm so happy this is a trend continuing into the new year because I went a little purchase crazy in '09.

10. (Hotel) Solage Calistoga - It was love at first sight when we arrived at Solage. The grounds are stunning, the rooms are cute and private, the bicycles they give you are ton of fun (except when I fell off mine) and the breakfast goes on the most delicious list.

Oh Christmas Tree...

Finally charged my camera so I can show you some of our holiday decorations. This year we had 2 trees. Next year, I plan on 4-5. I just love the way each is decorated differently and the warmth it adds to a house during Christmas. Here you can read about my need for the wood tree just for cards. Currently we have a colorful tree in our living room with all of our special decorations on it (usually a real tree) and a white tree in our dining room. Next year my husband wants a white NY Yankees tree in the home office and we will likely add a tree to our foyer. Below are some photos of our dining room and our stockings. I may change some of the dining room table decorations around and add some red for Valentine's Day - easy switch!

Christmas Eve Cooking

This will be the 3rd Christmas Eve we are hosting at our house, so I guess that makes it a tradition now. We have family over and we invite all of our Jewish friends to experience Christmas as a night without the movies or Chinese food. If you're Jewish, you understand exactly what I mean. We aren't a very traditional family. In fact, for as long as I remember, we usually have catered Italian Food. This year we decided to switch it up a bit. Our menu is all "comfort food". Here's a sampling of it below:

Honey Glazed Ham
Pulled Pork Sliders
Fried Chicken
Sweet Potato Casserole
Creamed Spinach
Mashed Potatoes
Mac & Cheese
Biscuits
Caesar Salad

The sweet potato is everyone's favorite and I always get requests for the recipe. So here it is!

Makes 1/2 tray
4 eggs - well beaten
1 1/2 pounds of canned yams - drained and mashed
2 cups of sugar
2 sticks of butter - melted
1 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

Mix well in bowl and pour into a greased baking pan.

2 cups of brown sugar
1/2 cup of flour
2 ziploc bags filled with pecans and chopped finely
1 stick of butter - melted

Mix well in bowl and pour over sweet potatoes as the topping.

Bake for 30-35 minutes on 350 degrees.

Another Day...One Step Closer to House Beautiful

When we got married, we bought a new construction home. I love that everything was brand new, never used and a completely vanilla (as we often called it) blank canvas, just waiting for our touches. The downside to our purchase was that we found the house after the builder made a lot of decisions. So we weren't able to choose the cabinets, tile or fixtures. Since we know this house isn't our final destination, we don't want to go too overboard with making expensive changes that we'd never see a return on. The answer was to pick and choose what absolutely needed to go and bring in great furniture, fabrics and decorating to complement what was here. The current project? Our great room fireplace. The mantle has nice detail, but the builder put these heinous decorative medallions on it. As you can guess, bubbye. The inside of the fireplace was painted tan. Blah. The faux logs. Yuck. The beige marble surrounding it all. Ick. In an effort to Vanessa-ify it - the tile is being changed to stainless steel bricks, the medallions removed, the inside painted a bright white and the logs swapped for crystals.

I can't wait to show you pics of the finished product!

Snow Day - Top 5

It's our first snow day of the season and it's been a ton of fun. We stayed home, wrapped all of our Christmas presents, baked and relaxed together. Here's my snow day top 5.

Cashmere leggings. Comfy, cozy and perfect for keeping warm and toasty.
The fireplace. There's nothing better than snuggling up in front of it and watching the snow fall.Feel good movies like one of my favorites, Can't Buy Me Love. Who doesn't love a little teenage Patrick Dempsey?
It's not as good as the Giggle Noodle of the 80s and 90s, but it brings back memories of snow days as a kid.
MightyLeaf's Earl Grey tea. As a year round tea drinker this is my absolute favorite. It's served at fine restaurants and hotels worldwide and if you try it, you'll know exactly why.

I love that there's a heel, but it isn't too high that I feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The suede is classy, but the height super sexy. The best part? They were on sale at Lord & Taylor + an additional 20% off. Score!

I can never do anything the normal way. Case in point - Wedding invitations. When I got married, I couldn't pick anything in a book. No way. I had to dream it up and have each and every piece a la carted to my idea of perfection. Then in decorating my house, I needed to have drapes, chandeliers and even bedding custom made because what I imagine never exists. Very often, my annoying taste and imagination falls on to my husband's shoulders. The latest? Christmas! We have a tree in our living room, one in our foyer and I want another in our dining room and formal living room. The year I'd like to add one of the 2. However, I won't just plop one there. It needs to have a purpose. The purpose I imagine is a wood or stainless tree with no leaves that will house all the holiday cards people send us year after year. I want it to be 7' 6" tall. I love my American Apparel white deep v-neck t-shirts. I have 6 XXS, 4 XS and 2 S. I work them into outfits ranging from casual to dressed up nights out. They're totally affordable, so once they get worn out, I'll just buy another dozen! Today I'm rocking an XS, tucked into a pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans, a skinny silver belt and a black corduroy blazer with rhinestone brooch on the lapel. The look is complete with my ballet flats that have unfortunately seen better days.

Obviously the table looks best uncovered, but since it's wood I had to get table pads so it doesn't get ruined when in use. So, over the pads a tablecloth needs to go. I eagerly tuned in to the American Music Awards to check out what everyone was wearing. I should have just cleaned my house.

Nicole Kidman: Mermaid has never been a style. Not even when Donna Martin did it on Halloween.

Kate Hudson: I actually like silver on her, but otherwise NO NO NO.

Kelly Clarkson: If someone dressed her, they should be fired...from fashion forever. The dress, hair, tights and shoes? It all looks frumpy and like it was put together by a middle of the road department store salesperson. I often get emails asking me about tips for starting a career in personal styling. Kelly is an example of what not to do!

Leona Lewis: Futuristic cool...but why the clogs?Fergie: Not a total miss in my book, but nothing special either.
Kristen Bell: Skin tone is never an attractive color (in fabric or lack of).

Shakira: Had 2 outfits. Though I wasn't overly feeling the love for either, she still gets best dressed in my book. Both dresses aren't misses. They fit her great. The yellow is amazing on her. The giant platform shoes are questionable, but in a sea of the above - can't complain!

Topshop - Part Deux

As promised, I went in and gave Topshop a 2nd chance. I'm not going to lie and tell you I didn't flash dirty looks at a ton of of overpriced cheesy apparel. Does someone really want to spend $200 on a completely sequin flapper dress, that's already having casualties all over the store floor? Nonetheless, I did run into the below pictured leather studded jacket. The quality seemed pretty good and I loved the style. It was $320 which is on the normal end of the price of a leather jacket. I didn't buy it because I really wanted the sold out gray and already have a tan jacket (bummer). I was far more impressed with the selection at Zara right now. Tons of classic, but still trendy blazers, plaid shirts, great dress pants, faux fur jackets, vests and scarves and great chunky sweaters. My only clothing purchase of the day came in the form of leggings (what else) and were from H&M. They're a gray, soft knit pair that I think would be perfect for sitting by the fire on a ski trip this winter. Honey, are you reading this???

Chanel Gets Me Again...

When I'm shopping in Manhattan my preferred area is Soho. Along Broadway I have access to 2 H&Ms, Urban Outfitters, Zara, a monster-size F21, Bloomingdale's, small boutiques and the still new-ish Topshop (more later). If I venture onto some of the cobblestone streets of Soho, I can go credit card crazy at Chanel. That's exactly what I did yesterday. I've eagerly awaited the arrival of the cruise collection and I just couldn't help myself. I got the red jumbo flap in caviar. It is the most amazing red! Far brighter and less orange than the 2005 one. I picked caviar because I felt that in the lambskin it actually looked like a metallic orange. Strange! I also purchased a bright blue medium flap in lambskin. It's like this totally outrageous and extremely unnecessary color of a Lego. Once 5 women converged on me in the store, waiting to pounce on the last blue bag that was in my hand, I knew I wasn't walking out without it. My whole life I've heard raves about London's mothership: Topshop. I've seen fabulous things worn by celebs that made me wish I had local access too. So when I finally did, I was super psyched to get my shopping on. Some of you may remember my first trip into Topshop earlier this year and how incredibly disappointed I was. Actually, I ripped it to shreds for it's overpriced, low quality items in laughable fabrics, prints and silhouettes. Well, tomorrow I'm willing to give it a 2nd chance. My wardrobe has a great mix of very trendy and very classic pieces that I mix and match depending on the day. I'm not afraid to layer, try new things and accessories are my best friend. I don't impulse buy. I hold on to items and am thrilled when they come back around in style. It's like a personal selection of vintage! My greatest fashion strength is my ability to mix high/mid and low end brands to complete a look. If I had to compare my style to celebrities (because that's how we all relate to anything these days!), I'd say a combo of Vanessa Hudgens and Olivia Palermo. Sounds strange, right?
